Audit Says FDA Lacks Authority to Bolster Oversight of Imported Food

There’s room for improvement in the Food and Drug Administration’s oversight of foreign food processing companies, according to the Government Accountability Office.

A GAO report released Thursday found that, while the number of foreign manufacturers inspected has increased in the last few years, the 200 inspections estimated for this year still leave too many gaps. There are about 189,000 overseas sites where food is made for sale in the United States. The FDA lacks the power to issue mandatory food recalls, is limited in the fines it can issue and does not coordinate well enough with states and customs officials to quickly remove tainted food from American shelves. The report recommends going to Congress for more authority.
