Wal-Mart Tests Kids’ Products for Toxic Cadmium

Wal-Mart announced on Monday that it has started testing children’s products for cadmium, a toxic metal that affects the kidneys and is a known carcinogen. There are no government regulations on cadmium, but the Consumer Products Safety Commission has announced that it is looking at even stricter regulations than the ones adopted by Wal-Mart, the Associated Press reports.

The world’s largest retailer is following the European Union’s standards, and after two weeks of testing, no product has failed, Wal-Mart reported. The Fashion Jewelry Trade Association has also recommended the European standards to its members. Several states have proposed tighter limits, and a bill passed Monday by the California Senate would effectively ban cadmium in children’s products.

The CPSC’s proposal may increase the time items like jewelry are soaked in a solution that resembles stomach acid. In recalls earlier this year, the CPSC used a longer testing period that offered a better idea of how much cadmium would escape if swallowed by a child. Wal-Mart said the longer tests are too expensive.
