The Consumer Product Safety Commission announced recalls of two different brands of cribs that pose suffocation and injury risks.
About 217,000 Graco-branded drop-side cribs were recalled Thursday because infants and toddlers can become wedged between the drop side and crib mattress and suffocate. The cribs’ drop sides also have been reported to break free. The CPSC and the cribs’ manufacturer have recieved 99 reports about the cribs, including two reports of children being trapped between the drop side and mattress and six falls.
On the same day the CPSC announced the recall of all Simplicity full-size cribs with tubular metal mattress support frames. Problems with the cribs’ mattress support frames can cause it to collapse or open a gap between the frame and mattress where children can become trapped. A 1-year-old-child died in 2008 after being wedged between the mattress and frame, and the CPSC is aware of 13 other incidents involving the recalled cribs.
