Tracheostomy Tubes Recalled for Possible Leak After 3 Deaths

The deaths of three patients and 1,200 complaints have led to the recall of a tube used to help patients on ventilators breathe. Covidien, the Massachusetts company that manufactures the tracheostomy tubes, issued the recall after reports that a possible leak in the device. This could result in decreased levels of oxygen or increased levels of carbon dioxide in the blood, which could lead to serious injury or death. The Food and Drug Administration is investigating whether the defective device led to the three deaths, reports the Associated Press.
