Federal guidelines released Friday say thousands of homes with tainted Chinese drywall must be gutted.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission released an update of its investigation into the toxic drywall. It states that electrical wiring, outlets, circuit breakers, fire alarm systems, carbon monoxide alarms, fire sprinklers, gas pipes and drywall must be removed from effected homes.
The drywall was installed mostly during the housing boom and after the Gulf Coast hurricanes, the Associated Press reports. More than 90 percent of reported problems come from Florida, Virginia, Mississippi, Alabama and Louisiana. The safety commission has received about 3,000 complaints about the drywall from 37 states.
The drywall causes the corrosion of wiring, air conditioning units, computers, doorknobs and jewelry, along with possible health problems. Some Chinese drywall tested emitted more than 100 times the amount of hydrogen sulfide than non-Chinese samples, according to the safety commission update.
