Workplace safety regulators ordered New Jersey Transit to pay $500,000, plus $75,000 in punitive damages, to a railroad employee who filed a whistleblower complaint. The transit company had cut the worker’s pay and then suspended him after he reported a job-related illness.
From the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s press release:
Railroad employees have the legal right to report work-related injuries and illnesses without fear of retaliation,” said Assistant Secretary of Labor for OSHA Dr. David Michaels. “This case sends a clear message: Railroads that retaliate against employees for exercising their rights will be held accountable.”
