A Rochester, N.Y.-based packaging company faces $127,000 in health and safety fines from federal regulators after an October blast at its Wisconsin plant killed a worker. The company plans to contest the fines, saying it is a member of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s Voluntary Protection Program, which recognizes companies that “have achieved exemplary occupational safety and health.” Under the program, work sites are monitored through a collaboration between industry and government.
The company, American Packaging, was given its program status last May. The worker killed in October was using a grinder to remove a bolt when fumes were ignited. OSHA investigated the site shortly after and found 26 serious health violations and three serious safety violations.
OSHA has a press release on the fines here. You can read a response from the company here.
