The U.S. Navy has banned smoking below deck on all submarines, and will offer sailors medication and support to help them kick the habit, Admiral John J. Donnelly, commander of the Navy’s Submarine Forces, has announced.
About 35 to 40 percent of sailors on active duty smoke, a Navy spokesperson told CNN. A leading anti-smoking group praised the decision, saying the Navy’s move recognizes the health threat posed by second-hand smoke and “sends a powerful message that all workplaces should be smoke-free.”
Twenty eight U.S. states and hundreds of cities and counties and have outlawed smoking in bars and restaurants, according to the Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids.
