Meth Labs Hit the Road

Law enforcement officials in several states are noticing a rise in portable, small-scale methamphetamine labs. They say meth is being produced in the backseats of cars, with production materials typically thrown out the window onto the side of the road in an effort to destroy evidence and evade police, The New York Times reports.

The drug is made using store-bought ingredients, but the chemical byproducts are toxic and pose a significant risk of explosion. In Kalamazoo, Mich., an undersheriff said officials sometimes spend all day picking up debris left behind by mobile meth labs.

According to the Drug Enforcement Administration, the number of meth labs, dumps and equipment rose nearly15 percent nationwide between 2007 and 2008, after a three-year decline of about 58 percent.
