Medical Groups Set Policy to Curb Industry Influence

An umbrella group of 650,000 medical professionals introduced its new ethics code on Wednesday, intended to curb many of the perks doctors receive from drug and medical device companies, the Associated Press reports.

The new rules from the Council of Medical Specialty Societies include the provision that top journal editors and leaders of its member groups end all financial ties with the drug and medical device industries. The 32 groups that make up the council — which include the American College of Physicians and the largest group of cancer specialists in the world, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, will also have to publicly disclose any financial support they receive from industry.

Fourteen of the 32 groups have already adopted the new ethics code, and most of the others say they will by the end of the year.

Very good news that more professional medical associations are now taking seriously the problem of conflicts of interest in the medical industry.
