After years of high rates of infection during hospital stays, the Health and Human Services Department found little improvement in 2009.
In a report to Congress, inspectors found an 8 percent increase in bloodstream infections after surgery, a 3.6 percent increase in urinary infections from catheters, and a 1.6 percent increase in common infections from medical care. Those are three of the five most common types of hospital-related infections, according to the Associated Press.
These increases could have financial consequences for hospitals. Under the federal health care reform law, in a few years, hospitals will receive reduced Medicare payments for certain types of preventable infections and readmission.
