In response to Toyota’s sudden acceleration problems, General Motors announced plans to install a brake override system in all of its passenger vehicles starting in 2012. GM’s announcement comes ahead of expected U.S. legislation that will require the technology industrywide, and sets a target date one year behind Toyota’s in 2011.
The system cuts power to a car when the brakes are applied at the same time as the gas pedal and is designed to prevent the out-of-control acceleration that has been linked to 51 deaths in Toyota vehicles.
