Four Workers Killed in Refinery Blast

A fiery explosion at a Washington state oil refinery killed four workers and critically injured three others Friday. The disaster happened at the Tesoro Corp. refinery about 70 miles north of Seattle. The company was fined $85,700 for 17 serious safety and health violations last year. The Associated Press reports that 150 less serious safety deficiencies were also found at that time.

A spokesman for the U.S. Chemical Safety Board, a federal advisory agency, told the AP it is “extremely concerned about safety in this sector” because the Occupational Safety and Health Administration has recently found a number of safety violations and accidents at refineries.
