Former Pfizer Scientist Claims Workplace Injuries

A federal jury is weighing a former Pfizer scientist’s claims that the company released dangerous chemicals into the air around its Connecticut plant and made lab workers sick.

Pfizer’s lawyer argued that the exhaust released by the plant went through a filtration system, pulling out almost all the impurities. According to testimony, the emissions made several lab workers sick shortly before the odor was noticed. The scientist, Becky McClain, said Pfizer fired her after she filed complaints with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

The case is the first federal civil trial involving a biotech worker claiming injury on the job and is being closely followed by workers’ rights advocates and the legal community,  according to The Day newspaper. The judge threw out an important claim in the case that Pfizer exposed McClain to an experimental virus that caused serious health problems and prevented her from working.
