Motorcycle deaths appear to have declined by at least 10 percent in 2009, according to a study released Thursday by the Governors Highway Safety Association. The study covers only nine months of 2009 but estimates that that total deaths for the year will not surpass 4,762, down from 5,290 in 2008.
The drop may signal the end of 11 years of increasing motorcycle fatalities. The study’s authors speculate that the depressed economy, increased awareness of motorcycle safety, bad weather and fewer baby boomers taking up motorcycle riding led to the decline.
