Cigarette Sponsor Pulled from Kelly Clarkson Concert in Indonesia

Following an uproar among anti-tobacco advocates, a cigarette company will no longer sponsor American pop star Kelly Clarkson’s April 29 concert in Indonesia.

The cigarette company, Djarum, was using concert promotion materials to advertise its L.A. Lights cigarettes. Matthew Myers, the president of Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, said Clarkson was “effectively becoming a spokesperson for the tobacco industry.”

Clarkson responded to the outcry — which Myers says prompted 1,600 e-mails to Clarkson’s management and hundreds of messages on her Facebook page — by saying she had no idea about the sponsorship and would carry on with the concert for her fans, even with the cigarette sponsorship.

Indonesia is one of the last countries with almost no rules about tobacco promotion and sales. About 63 percent of men are smokers, and a quarter of boys age 13 to 15 are already addicted.
