CDC Calls for New Safety Tactics as Foodborne Illness Rates Plateau

The rate of illness from a dangerous form of E. coli declined significantly in 2009, but overall rate reductions have leveled off for other foodborne illnesses and pathogens, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Thursday. The agency called on government and the food industry to try new strategies to combat foodborne diseases.

The CDC has tracked food-related illnesses since 1996 through its FoodNet project. In the 10 states it monitors, FoodNet found the least progress in reducing salmonella infections. Salmonella has proven difficult to curtail because it is passed on by a wide variety of foods, including meat, eggs, produce and processed food, the agency said.
