Bimbo Bakeries Slapped With Safety Fine

California job safety officials fined Bimbo Bakeries $230,000 for ignoring safety violations that caused one worker to lose a finger and another an arm at the bread maker’s factories. From the California Division of Occupational Safety and Health press release:

We believe there are systemic problems which have resulted in numerous employees suffering amputations due to unguarded equipment,” Cal/OSHA chief Len Welsh said.

Bimbo had been issued a smaller fine after safety inspectors found the company at fault in a 2003 accident in which a woman lost her arm. But the fine was reduced to zero by an appeals board judge. The appeals process has recently come under fire from the state legislature and Cal/OSHA staff.

These fines are minimal to corporations. Thats just the price of doing business. Bimbo Baking lost a class action suit recently for failing to give their employees breaks and meal time for their route drivers. Again the settlement was a drop in the bucket and employees are still working without breaks for fear of retribution.
