Bayer CropScience has agreed to pay a $143,000 fine for safety violations at its insecticide plant in West Virginia. The 15 violations, issued by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration last year, are the result of a 2008 explosion at the plant that killed two workers and could have been much worse.
According to a congressional inquiry, the explosion nearly damaged a tank that held the same chemical responsible for a 1984 leak in Bhopal, India, that killed thousands of people. The owner of the Bhopal plant, Union Carbide, is the previous owner of Bayer’s plant in West Virginia.
Bayer announced $25 million in safety upgrades and a plan to move the chemical storage tank underground.
