Auto Safety Overhaul Could be Unveiled This Week

New legislation that would drastically reform auto safety laws could be made public sometime this week.

In the wake of the Toyota recalls, Sen. Jay Rockefeller, D-W. Va., and Rep. Henry Waxman, D-Calif, are drafting a bill expected to require all automakers to install brake override systems and other technologies to prevent runaway cars, The Detroit News reports.

The bill is also expected to increase the maximum fine for delaying safety recalls from $16.4 million. The legislation may also call for beefing up the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration and giving it more authority to enact more prompt recalls, according to The Detroit News.

Last week, Toyota agreed to pay the maximum fine of $16.4 million for delaying a recall of 2.3 million vehicles over problems with unintended acceleration problems.
