A prestigious medical body said the American high-salt diet is unsafe, while a group of retired military officers called our diet a national security threat, in separate reports released today.
From the first report, authored by the congressionally funded Institute of Medicine: “In the face of chronic disease risks associated with sodium intake, the current level of sodium in the food supply — added by food manufacturers, food service operators and restaurants — is too high to be ‘safe.’” The IOM said the government should set standards for decreasing sodium in food.
Manufacturers and restaurants need to meet these standards so that all sources in the food supply are involved and so that the consumer’s taste preferences can be changed over time to the lower amounts of salt in food.
Meanwhile, in a report titled “Too Fat to Fight,” an organization of retired military officers called Mission: Readiness said that weight problems “have become the leading medical reason why recruits are rejected for service.” The report said 9 million young adults are too overweight to join the military. From a press release on the report:
We believe that the child obesity issue is so serious it has become a threat to our national security,” said Lt. Gen. Seip. “Mission: Readiness supports efforts by Senator Richard Lugar and Agriculture Secretary Vilsack to get new legislation on the books that would help reduce child obesity.”

Not only have we become “too fat to fight” but also too sedentary to fight. This is a two sided coin. Poor diets and lack of movement during the day due to sedentary lifestyles. Treadmill desks like TrekDesk offer students and employees a way of turning a sedentary life into an active one by walking slowly while working, studying or using the computer. Consider this, we only consume 100 calories more than we did in the 1960′s (when there was no obesity problem) but today we burn 600-700 calories less per day due to long commutes, sedentary jobs, and 500 cable channels at home. This is a matter of national security. Not only are we becoming to fat to fight but we will bankrupt our nation with health diseases related to obesity if we do not reverse the trends today.
