Toyota’s sudden acceleration problems have dominated the headlines in recent months, but a new analysis of consumer complaints to automakers shows the majority have to do with air bags.
Speed control issues accounted for only 3 percent of the claims filed with the Big Six carmakers, according to the analysis by the New York Times, while airbag complaints made up over half. Problems reported with air bags included both unexpected deployment and a failure to deploy during accidents. Other claims faulted the devices for not preventing deaths or injuries, even when correctly inflated.
In the last decade, there have been 70 air bag-related recalls of vehicles made by the nation’s six largest automakers.
