Air Safety Authorities Want to Curb Cockpit Distractions

The Federal Aviation Administration is pushing airlines to crack down on cockpit distractions and make sure pilots focus on flying safely instead of on their laptop screens.

In a statement issued Monday, Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said the public expects pilots to focus on flying and safety. “There is no room for distraction when your job is to get people safely to their destinations,” he said.

Last October, two Northwest Airlines pilots overshot their destination by 150 miles because they were engrossed in their personal computers.

Legislation currently before Congress that would reauthorize FAA programs contains a provision that would outlaw the use of personal electronic devices in the cockpit, Portfolio reports.
