Washington State Toughens Cell Phone Use and Driving Laws

Washington will become the latest state to allow police officers to pull drivers over for texting and driving when a new law goes into effect this summer.

Texting or talking without a hands-free device is already illegal in the state. But until now, that kind of multitasking has been considered a secondary offense — which means officers can only pull over drivers if they stop them for another reason. The new law makes it a primary offense, meaning it will merit a traffic stop.

Police officers in Oregon, California, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey and Washington, D.C., can stop drivers for texting or talking with handheld phones while driving. Texting while driving is a primary offense in 15 states.
