U.S. Fines BP-Husky Refinery $3 Million for Safety Violations

The U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration on Monday announced a $3 million fine against an Ohio oil refinery operated by BP North American.

The refinery, owned by BP and Canadian-based Husky Energy, was cited for 42 willful violations of failing to protect workers from flammable gas and explosive materials.

According to Dow Jones, BP denies that the violations were intentional and claims the injury rate at the refinery near Toledo is 25 percent lower than the industry average.

OSHA has inspected the refinery a dozen times since 1991. An explosion at BP’s Texas City refinery in 2005, which killed 15 workers and injured 70 and resulted in a record $87 million fine from OSHA, “has pushed regulators to take a more proactive role,” Dow Jones reported. BP told the Wall Street Journal it has spent more than $1 billion to improve safety since the Texas City refinery blast.
