Just as makers of the world’s cheapest car, the Tata Nano, gear up to debut the tiny auto in Western nations in 2011, safety concerns in its home market, India, have people wondering whether the car will be ready for worldwide export.
A driver in Mumbai was driving his new Nano home from the dealership recently when the engine burst into flames. No one was injured, and Tata Motors officials are describing this as an isolated incident. But the carmaker attributed three previous instances of Nanos producing smoke to a subsequently corrected electrical switch malfunction.
The car, which starts at $2,500 in India, arrived to rave reviews. Billed as the “people’s car” at its introduction in 2008, it was seen as a safety revolution in India, where scooters remain the vehicle of choice. The carmaker had the only crash test facility in India, and the Nano surpassed the country’s safety standards. Tata, which also makes Jaguars and Land Rovers, plans to sell the cars at a higher price in Europe in 2011 and in the United States starting possibly in 2012.
The Associated Press has more on the fiery Nanos (via The Detroit News). The Times of London reported safety concerns about the Nano back in 2008.
UPDATE: Deepesh Rathore, an auto analyst at IHS Global Insight in New Delhi, told the AP that there are fewer than 30,000 Nanos on the road today, meaning the problem rate is fairly high on a percentage basis.

This is traditionally sloppy journalism, typical of the biased crap that killed the MSM.
Without telling us *how many* Nanos are in circulation it is beyond ignorant (although perfectly typical MSM) to get hysterical about isolated, anecdotal cases.
Heard of “context”?
You’ve got a career in the US Government, son – pimping for state-owned craptastic automakers like GM/Chysler by slandering lower-cost, higher-quality makes (like, say, Toyota…MSM characterized deathtraps that somehow escaped decades of Consumer Report scrutiny).
Good point, cas127. We updated our post to include that there are fewer than 30,000 Nanos on the road today.
