Supreme Court Hears Challenge to Chicago Gun Ban

The U.S. Supreme Court appears likely to strike down Chicago’s ban on handguns, a move that could open the door to challenges of gun laws across the country.

In a case brought by four Chicago residents, a majority of justices seemed to agree that the right to bear arms is a fundamental right provided by the Second Amendment. Lawyers for Chicago argued that, in the case of handguns, the need to protect citizens outweighs a constitutional right. They argued that cities and states are ultimately responsible for people’s safety and should be able to ban the weapons criminals use most. At the end of arguments on March 2, justices seemed unwilling to allow outright bans, but open to regulations such as banning concealed weapons.
