Study Hits OSHA Funding

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration has suffered from inadequate funding and too much reliance on industry cooperation, leading to ineffective regulation, says a study by a watchdog group.  According to the study by the Center for Progressive Reform, a nonprofit organization of university scholars, OSHA in 2010 will be able to inspect only 40,000 of more than 8 million work sites. Since 1997, the agency has managed to adopt new exposure standards for just one industrial chemical, according to the study. Further, the modest penalties collected by OSHA provide little incentive for companies to comply with health and safety regulations, the study says.
