Salmonella in the Spices?

More than 250 people have been sickened to date by a strain of Salmonella Montevideo first discovered in January, according to federal health officials. The outbreak seems to stem from black and red pepper supplied to Daniele International Inc., and perhaps other companies, and may have sickened consumers who purchased salami seasoned with the pepper.

Here’s the Food and Drug Administration’s press release with a link to the full list of recalled products.

A separate strain of the pathogen, Salmonella Tennessee, recently forced the recall of hundreds of products containing potentially-tainted hydrolyzed vegetable protein.
