Regulators Cited Human Error for Acceleration Deaths in Other Cars

More fatalities attributed to sudden acceleration occurred in vehicles made by companies other than Toyota, according to a review of federal records since 1980 by Bloomberg news.

According to statistics compiled by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 59 of the 110 deaths attributed to sudden acceleration occurred in vehicles other than Toyotas. While Toyota still led all car makers with 51 deaths, 20 deaths were attributed to sudden acceleration in vehicles made by Ford and 12 in Chrysler vehicles. Bloomberg notes that 36 of the 51 fatalities in Toyota vehicles were reported after widespread publicity of unintended acceleration of the cars began.

Critics of federal regulators point to a 1989 NHTSA policy paper that attributed sudden acceleration to drivers accidentally stepping on the gas, leading investigators to discount most claims of sudden acceleration.
