Possible Cancer Link Complicates 9/11 Workers Settlement

Although the cancer rate among 9/11 responders is no higher than in the general public, the federal judge who threw out a settlement with New York City still thinks $100,000 isn’t enough compensation for responders who develop cancer. The $575 million settlement would have resolved about 10,000 lawsuits from workers who became sick since 2001.

It may be years before workers develop cancer, but three studies tracking the health of responders have found no link between cancer and the dust from the fallen towers. New York’s state health department found that 250 of the 40,000 ground zero workers had died of cancer since 2009. Many of the workers also developed asthma and other non-lethal illnesses from exposure to asbestos, benzene and other chemicals that scientists think can slowly lead to cancer.
