Outbreak of Illnesses Renews Debate Over Raw Milk

Concern about the safety of raw milk flared anew when the Food and Drug Administration reported 12 new cases of illnesses linked to a dangerous bacteria in raw milk.

Raw milk has a band of loyal consumers who praise its flavor and health benefits, and even cross state lines to obtain it in the 28 states where it’s legal. But it also has vocal critics, including public health officials.

For decades, the FDA and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have cited evidence that bacteria in raw milk can sicken or even kill people. From 1998 to 2008, there were 85 outbreaks linked to raw milk consumption, with 1,614 reported illnesses, 187 hospitalizations and two deaths, according to the CDC.

The Wall Street Journal’s Laura Landro has taken up the controversy this week. The story has received passionate comments from both sides.
