OSHA Wants Tougher Enforcement by State Safety Agencies

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is pushing state safety agencies to strengthen enforcement of workplace regulations and to target high-risk industries. OSHA is reviewing the level of oversight in the 21 states that run their own safety agencies — a move safety advocates say could remedy years of lax federal monitoring.

The Wall Street Journal points to recent lapses in Nevada as the catalyst for the federal government’s interest: ”It was when we got the results back from [Nevada] and realized how many problems there were that we thought we better take a look at all states,” said OSHA head David Michaels.

State leaders described OSHA’s pressure on state safety agencies as unprecedented.
