Organic Standards Poorly Enforced, Says Inspector General Report

The nation’s top watchdog on agricultural issues criticized his agency for failing to properly enforce organic standards for food. In one case, the U.S. Department of Agriculture discovered a company was falsely marketing mint as organic but didn’t take action for two years, according to the report by the agency’s inspector general. The report also found fault with the USDA’s oversight of California’s organic program, and of organic certifying agents.

From the report:

None of the four certifying agents we visited conducted periodic [pesticide] residue testing of the approximately 5,000 certified operations for which they were responsible, and there is no assurance that certifying agents performed regular periodic testing at any of the approximately 28,000 certified organic operations worldwide.
