Federal regulators may require that data recorders, like the black boxes found in airplanes, be installed in all new vehicles, according to the head of the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, David Strickland.
Strickland, who testified Thursday at the House Energy and Commerce Committee , said the agency had not made mistakes in regulating Toyota, pointing to the eight sudden acceleration investigations opened by NHTSA. Strickland has also described the rate of safety complaints against Toyota as unremarkable.
In 2006, the government recommended that automakers install data recorders, but it did not set standards for recording the data. The recorders in Toyota vehicles can only be interpreted by company representatives
