Iowa Law Would Loosen Gun Restrictions, Follow National Trend

Iowa sheriffs would be mostly stripped of authority to deny a gun carry permit under a bill passed by both houses of the state’s legislature. The bill, which must be signed by the governor, also says gun permits issued in other states would be valid in Iowa without review by the state’s public safety commissioner. The Des Moines Register highlights the bill’s key provisions, and arguments from the bill’s supporters and detractors.

Two dozen states eased gun restrictions from 2007 to 2009, mostly in the South and West, according to a map produced by the Associated Press. Among the most common changes are allowing firearms to be carried in parks and/or wildlife areas, loosening restrictions on storing guns in parked cars (including, in South Carolina, on public school grounds), and allowing felons whose convictions have been expunged to carry guns.
