High Accident Rate Among Homemade Planes, FAA Warns

The Federal Aviation Administration has issued a warning about single-engine airplanes hand assembled from kits, such as the one that killed a jogger in South Carolina last week. The FAA warned pilots that these types of planes tend to stall when traveling at slow speeds, and pilots should be especially aware when descending to land.

The planes, which fly as fast as 370 mph, compared to 150 mph for most other single-engine planes, have a disproportionately high accident rate. They accounted for 18 percent of the noncommercial plane crashes in 2008 while being involved in only 5 percent of the flight time.

More on the FAA warning in the Associated Press.
