FDA to Increase Criminal Unit Accountability, Prosecutions

Under sharp criticism from Congress and in a new government report, the Food and Drug Administration plans to increase prosecution of pharmaceutical and food industry executive as part of an effort to strengthen and hold its criminal division more accountable.

The agency announced its plans in a letter to Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, who requested the Government Accountability Office review the FDA’s Office of Criminal Investigations. The report, released today, said the criminal unit has operated with little or no accountability to top FDA officials and has fallen short in comparison to other agencies in developing performance standards.

The FDA largely agreed with the report’s assessment and said it is “developing meaningful performance measures” at the recommendation of an internal committee.
