FDA Considers New Cancer Warning for Indoor Tanning

The Food and Drug Administration is considering new cancer warnings for tanning lamps. The ultraviolet lamps are currently considered low-risk by the FDA and do not require review before they are marketed. But the industry, which includes about 30 million yearly customers and 25,000 salons across the country, could start feeling the squeeze of increased regulation.

Indoor tanning increases the risk of melanoma by at least 15 percent, according to the FDA. A recent Swedish study found that tanning 10 times a year increased the chances of developing melanoma by 80 percent. The American Academy of Dermatology opposes indoor tanning, and the House health care bill includes a 10 percent tax on tanning salons.

The Indoor Tanning Association said warnings currently found on tanning beds are adequate. The FDA is scheduled Thursday to decide on expanded regulation.
