FDA Cites Food Makers for Labeling Violations

The Food and Drug Administration on Wednesday sent letters to 17 food manufacturers, calling on them to correct labeling violations on 22 packaged food products.

The products, including Dreyer’s Grand Ice Cream, Nestle and POM Wonderful juices and shortening from Spectrum Organic Products, were labeled with misleading claims such as “contains no trans-fats” on a product with high levels of saturated fats and the ability to prevent heart disease, the FDA said.

The FDA has recently increased its scrutiny of nutrition labels. It is currently considering front-of-package labeling of calories, serving sizes and nutrients to help consumers choose healthier foods.

Here’s coverage from the Los Angeles Times on the FDA’s warning. The New York Times reported the FDA’s labeling proposals last month.
