The Federal Aviation Administration proposed fines of $787,500 for American Airlines for multiple maintenance violations, including improper rudder inspections and malfunctioning flight computers, on aircraft that made 15 flights with passengers during 2008 and 2009.
Among the violations was an April 2008 incident in which the FAA alleges American mechanics found problems with the computers on two aircrafts but did not replace them immediately. The plane then flew 10 passenger flights before the computer was replaced. The crews for these flights were led to believe that the computers were fully functional, the FAA said in a press release.
In the second case, in March 2008, the FAA alleges that the airline improperly followed rudder inspection protocol. As a result, four aircraft didn’t comply with safety rules. The FAA claims American failed to ground the planes even after it was advised of the situation and instead used the aircraft for three passenger flights over two days.
A spokesman for the airline told the Wall Street Journal that American is proud of its safety record and will meet with FAA officials to discuss the fines.
