In advance of an April summit in Washington on nuclear power and disarmament, the president of the European Union is calling for global nuclear safety standards.
The standards, modeled after those already accepted by the E.U., are seen as a way to give Western nations, particularly France, an advantage in building new plants in places like China, according to The New York Times. The E.U.’s standards cover the building and maintenance of plants, inspections and the handling of radioactive materials.
