EPA Fines Military for Leaky Tanks, Criticizes Guam Expansion Plans

The Environmental Protection Agency has fined the U.S. Military about $167,000 for leaky underground petroleum storage tanks at West Point.

The EPA is also criticizing the military’s plans to move thousands of personnel from Okinawa to Guam without a sufficient expansion of the island’s infrastructure. In a six-page letter to the Navy, dated Feb. 17, the EPA outlined its concerns about the proposed relocation, which at its peak would increase the island’s population by 79,000. Among the agency’s concerns are the increased sewage (the military is already in violation of the Clean Water Act in Guam, according to the Associated Press), strain on the island’s water supply and damage to a coral reef.
