EPA Delays Greenhouse Gas Regulation Until 2011

The Environmental Protection Agency said Monday it would not start regulating greenhouse gas emissions before January.

After finding last year that carbon dioxide and other common industrial emissions pose a health threat, the EPA will require that power plants and other industrial sites obtain federal pollution permits. Several states and industry groups have filed lawsuits challenging the move.

The EPA plans to phase in regulation over several years, starting with the largest emissions sources. The Obama administration has said it would prefer to address climate change through comprehensive energy legislation but is moving forward with the regulation in case Congress cannot resolve its differences on the issue.

More about the regulations in The New York Times. Here’s the EPA’s announcement.
