A jury in New Jersey found that AstraZeneca was not liable for a patient developing diabetes after taking the drug maker’s popular antipsychotic Seroquel. The decision is the first in thousands of cases claiming Seroquel caused diabetes.
Ted Baker, a Vietnam veteran, took Seroquel for three years to treat post-traumatic stress disorder. The drug is approved to treat schizophrenia and bipolar disorder but is widely prescribed for off-label uses, including insomnia and other psychiatric conditions, the Associated Press reports. Another 22,100 plaintiff groups are making similar claims about the drug, which brings in $4.9 billion a year.
The jury found that Seroquel’s labeling adequately warned of the link between the drug and the development of diabetes.
