16 Cities Sue Herbicide Maker Over Contaminated Drinking Water

Sixteen Midwestern cities filed a federal lawsuit Monday in an attempt to get Syngenta, the manufacturer of the herbicide Atrazine, to pay for filtering the chemical from public drinking water.

The weed killer has long been the subject of health concerns. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, significant long-term exposure to Atrazine can cause cardiovascular or reproductive problems. The EPA is currently reevaluating the herbicide, including as a possible cause of cancer. The European Union banned its use in 2004.

A spokesman for Syngenta told The Huffington Post Investigative Fund that the levels of Atrazine found in drinking water are safe.

The communities are in Kansas, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Missouri and Iowa. Each gets drinking water near agricultural fields where Atrazine is used. The cities have spent more than $350 million filtering the herbicide from their water supplies, their lawyer said.
