Sepia-toned photograph showing device for testing stress in a concrete beam. The screw jack at the right applies the load, measured by the deflection of the heavy flat spring at the top. The spiral spring at the left takes up the "play" of the nuts, keeping the load on the beam constant. The device was designed and built in the materials science laboratory.
